In 2017, researchers at UNC Wilmington made a discovery that would put Wilmington on the national map for the wrong reasons: GenX, a replacement PFAS compound, had been discharged into the Cape Fear River for over three decades by the Chemours plant in Bladen County. The compound was detected in Wilmington's finished drinking water, and the discovery led to state investigations, litigation, and a consent order governing discharges from the facility.
GenX is one member of a larger family of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) — synthetic chemicals used in industrial processes and consumer products. PFAS are notable for their persistence: they break down very slowly in the environment. The EPA's 2024 rule set the maximum contaminant level for PFOA and PFOS at 4 parts per trillion, and the agency cites peer-reviewed research associating PFAS exposure with a range of health effects as the basis for that standard.
